Day 9 (No surgery for now!! Hooray!)
So today has been crazy because we had been told that they found free air in Hailey's abdomen, which is almost always a sign of a bowel perforation, which is what Hailey had after her G-tube surgery that caused her to be on ECMO. We were especially concerned because they have told us that ECMO wouldn't really be an option for Hailey right now. Thankfully the 2nd x-ray made it look like the air is inside the intestine, which means we won't need surgery. The surgical team has been reviewing the images and although we haven't heard from them, the nurse tells us that no news is good news. He said that we'd have been rushed off to surgery already if they still thought it was free air, so we are breathing huge sighs of relief.
She is still in a tenuous place because her belly is still large and her colon is still a potential cause of perforation or sepsis, but she isn't needing emergency surgery right now. Her hematocrit was low so they gave her some red blood cells. They still haven't gotten any results from the HIT test yet. I guess that reaction (a reaction to heparin) is pretty bad news, so we are praying she doesn't have that. Her platelet count is still low but they can't give her any until they know the results of the HIT test. Her belly is still huge and very sick. We are praying the antibiotics will kick in and get rid of the c-diff. They have had to put her on more breathing support because of her large belly. So, the c-diff is really causing a lot of problems right now, probably the great majority)
We definitely got a scare with the x-rays this morning. Hopefully the issues with her belly can be resolved before it gets to that point. We really appreciate all the prayers and thoughts. We will continue to keep you posted!
